Frost Cloth

Frost cloth in 17, 30, 50, 70 and 120 GSM. Non-woven frost protection for seedlings, vegetables and orchards. Australian supplier, nationwide delivery.

Frost fabric is a lightweight non-woven cover that traps warmth around the crop and lifts the temperature underneath by several degrees on cold nights. Weight is chosen by season and crop: lighter 17-30 GSM grades suit seedlings and shade-sensitive plants and can be laid directly over the row, while heavier 50-120 GSM grades give stronger frost and wind protection where more cover is needed. All grades let light and water through, so covers can stay on through a cold snap.

Frequently asked questions

Which frost cloth GSM should I choose?

GSM is the fabric weight. 17 and 30 GSM are light enough to lay directly over seedlings and let most light through. 50 and 70 GSM give stronger frost protection for vegetables and young plants. 120 GSM is the heaviest grade, for the hardest frosts and for wind protection.

When should I put frost cloth on?

Cover plants in the late afternoon before a frost is forecast, so the cloth traps the warmth the soil has stored during the day. Let the cloth reach the ground on all sides and secure the edges.

Can frost cloth stay on during the day?

Light and water pass through, so lighter grades can stay on through a cold spell. Heavier grades can make it too warm underneath on sunny days, so lift or remove them once the frost risk passes.

Does frost cloth need hoops?

Lightweight 17–30 GSM cloth can rest directly on most plants. Heavier grades and tender crops do better on hoops or a frame, which also leaves an air gap that adds insulation.
