What is wildlife-friendly bird netting?
Netting with a mesh small enough that birds, bats and possums can't push their heads through and become tangled. In Victoria, netting on household fruit trees must have a mesh of 5mm by 5mm or smaller at full stretch; our Ryset net has a 4.9mm mesh.
Should I use bird netting or fruit protection bags?
Net the whole tree or vine when most of the crop needs protecting. Use fruit protection bags for individual fruit or clusters, for trees too large to net, or where you only want to protect part of the harvest. Bags also keep fruit fly off each piece of fruit.
How do I put bird netting on without trapping wildlife?
Pull the net taut over a frame or the canopy and secure it at the trunk or ground so there are no loose folds or open gaps underneath. Check it regularly while fruit is ripening.
